For bravery, foresight and skill in saving the lives of eight members of his crew, immersed in the sea owing to the capsizing of the ship’s boat in boisterous weather after leaving their vessel sunk by a submarine on Atugust 3rd, 1915. The crew left the “‘Costello’’ in two boats, which became parted. In Capt, Penwill’s boat there were nine men and himself, none of whom belonged to the deck department, and were totally ignorant of how to manage the boat, the result being that the Captain had to remain at the tiller the whole time. When they had been in the boat for 20 hours, the wind suddenly dropped, but only to shortly after strike the boat with a sharp gust, which capsized her throwing the occupants into the sea. Capt. Penwill’s coolness and presence of mind was such that he directed the men to right the craft, and eight of the hands succeeded in climbing into her, but were up to their waists in water, and no means of baling the boat out. The mast had been carried away and only one oar left, so that the men’s case was almost hopeless, After enduring 13 hours of this peril, a patrol boat came on the scene, and all, with the exception of one man were saved. When the boat capsized Capt, Penwill was caught under her, but being a good swimmer, struck out under water to clear the boat before comipg to the surface, and to his presence of mind he not only owes his own life, but was the means of saving those of his men. Photocopies of the official record with the medal. A rare war-time award.

Tank Corps.); French Legion of Honour, 4th class; French Croix de Guerre 1914-15, with two bronze palm leaves. Nearly extremely fine.
Born 2nd December 1884 in Co. Dublin, Edward Kendrick enlisted in the 2nd Battn, Innskilling Fusiliers in April 1908. On the outbreak of War in Aug. 1914, he was Sergeant of the Machne Gun Section, in which capacity he took part in the heavy fighting around Ploegsteert in September, where he was wounded. For his part in the action he was awarded a Commission in the Field. As a 2nd Lieut., he returned to active service in the 2nd Royal Irish Fusiliers, beng promoted to Lieut, in August 1915, Whilst with the Regiment he was awarded the Croix de Guerre.
Transferred to the 27th Northumberland Fusiliers (Tyneside Irish), and given a temporary Captaincy, Edward Kendrick was again wounded, returning in June 1916 as Second in Command of the 10th Lincolns (The Grimsby Chums) who were preparing for the Somme offensive. On July Ist, Major Kendrick led a Company in the attack on La Boiselle crater, but the four perfectly spaced waves of soldiers stood no chance against the German machine-guns, and barely any managed to reach the enemy lines. Of the 20 officers and 822 other ranks who went into the attack, only five officers and 335 men remained unscathed. For his part in the attack, Major Kendrick was mentioned in despatches.
In October of 1916, he was given his own command as Lt, Colonel of the llth Battn. Suffolks, subsequently serving at Bois Grenier, Arras, and in the Ypres Salient, during the battle for Passchendaele, Whilst in a pillbox at Kortabeek Farm, he had a fortunate escape when a German shell struck the lintel of the doorway exploding harmlessly outside. During this period Col. Kendrick briefly took command of the 101st Infantry Brigade, and in January 1918, he was awarded the D.S.O., as well as a second Mention in Despatches. On 27th December he left the Suffolks to command 34 Battn. (240 Coy) Machine Gun Corps.
On 21st March 1918, the Battn. were in the line between Henin and Croiselles, and bore the brunt of the German Offensive, fighting a hard rearguard action, and adding another mention in despatches to Col. Kendrick’s distinctions. During the Battles of the Lys, the 34th M.G.C. assisted the French at the very extreme right of the British Lines, repelling continuous counter attacks between the 9th-20th April, one Vickers Gun firing 55,000 rounds non-stop. For this action, he was awarded The Legion d’Honneur and Croix de Guerre avec Cita- tion d’Armee, which were awarded personally by the G.O.C, 34th Division. November 11th brought an end to hostilities on the Western Front, with the 34th M.G.C. becoming Army of Occupation troops, Col, Kendrick elected to remain in the Army, accepting a drop in rank to Major, and transferring to the Tank Corps, with whom he found more action in Waziristan between 1921- 1923, serving with the 9th Armoured Car Company. He retired from the Army in 1924.

SALE CATALOGUES
On the average we issue twelve or more Coin Catalogues and three Naval & Military Medal Catalogues each year, some of which are usually of Sales of important Collections.
CATALOGUE SUBSCRIPTIONS
Sale Catalogues, frequently illustrated, are normally posted to Subscribers about three weeks prior to the date of Sale.
Lists of “Prices Bid” are issued after each Sale, thus giving at a _ glance a reliable guide to value. The final test of value must always be auction prices rather than the figures given in books of reference, for changing times and fashions soon render the latter obsolete and misleading. The Lists of “Prices Bid” will probably be enclosed in a following Sale Catalogue.
AIR MAIL POSTAGE To allow subscribers resident outside Europe time to submit Postal Bids, Sale Catalogues will, if desired, be sent by Air Mail. Air Mail postage is not, however, included in the Sub- scription Rate and the cost must be borne by the Subscriber. In such cases a deposit against the cost is required.
